In the Mailbox
This is a suggestion that might work best for the mailboxes that are attached to the front of the house versus the free-standing mailboxes that sit along the side of the road. To hide your key in this type of mailbox, you will want to cut a piece of thin tin so that it is the perfect size to cover the bottom of the interior of the box. Make sure to cut it so that it is just small enough for you to grab one edge to lift it up. Once you have done that, you can lay a single spare house key along the bottom of the mailbox and then cover it with the newly cut tin, which now acts as a false bottom.
In the Bird Feeder
The first thing you will want to do is empty your bird feeder so that all of the bird seed is gone. Wipe down the bottom of the feeder with a damp cloth and then dry it off with another cloth so that all of the bird seed dust and residue is gone. This is important so that the spare house key will stay in place. Once you have done that, you will want to tape the key to the bottom of the feeder with a large piece of packing tape. Make sure that you are using enough tape so that the entire key is covered, as it needs to be protected from any moisture that might be able to make its way into the bird feeder. After the key is in place, you can then put all of the bird seed back in place so that the key is covered.
With those two simple ideas in mind, you should have no trouble making sure that there is always a spare house key nearby. This way, you will never have to worry about becoming locked outside of your house again.
